thought there'd be more 'other than english' novels on the list.

What rubbish! The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is way better than The Da Vinci Code.

Interesting that in the top 10 there are 2 that are series books (Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings Does that make it the top 18?)...yet the 4 books in the Hitchhikers trilogy are not. Restaurant at the End of the Universe was my fav in that series.

I'm glad I've read 10 of the top 30 (or is that 18 of the top 38)..makes me feel a bit scholarly.

I almost think that if a movie was made for the book it moved it into this list. The Da Vinci Code that high is ridiculous. May as well put the Firm there as well.

No Hemingway (just surprising)? No John Updike (the Jungle come on!)? Isn't that sacrilege? No Confederacy of Dunces?

Darn my slow-reading, ADD-addled brain. I've only read nine off the entire list. Seen several of the others in movie form, though.

I think I need to read "The Kite Runner."

I'm glad "Possession" - the ultimate English major novel - got in there. It's quite a tour-de-force, but seriously fun and rewarding.

And, while I liked "The Da Vinci Code," I will agree with Bill. I will disagree with Bob, however, that it's surprising that Hemingway isn't represented. I think his time of adulation has passed. Honestly, I can't think of a more overrated writer in the English language. Snoresville. Sorry, man.
